Running in the VIVOBAREFOOT Evo Running Shoe – My Review!
First off, I have to point out that if you’re a fan of extremely modern-looking shoes, you will absolutely love the Evo. Like VFFs, these things will definitely draw attention when you wear them, but not because they look odd. Instead, everyone will notice your VIVOBAREFOOT Evo Running shoes because they look so cool!
The outer is made of incredibly light, flexible honeycomb-patterned mesh, and the color patterns that these shoes come in are downright stylish. Even though they wear a lot like shoes with fingers, their appearance is pretty conventional so you may find yourself wearing them around town quite a bit (I know I did).
As for its fit and feel, the Evo is quite possibly the most comfortable, natural-feeling shoe I’ve ever worn. The thin skin mesh upper and its accompanying memory foam adjusted more quickly to the shape and contours of my foot than any other shoe I’ve worn. Meanwhile, the 4mm sole was so light and flexible (particularly after I pulled out the removable foam foot bed) that it almost felt like I was wearing socks. Truth be told, these things were so comfortable that I didn’t want to take them off.
When I was ready to take the Evo out for a trial run, I decided to do something a little different from my standard routine. I usually run a lot on the trails near my home, but considering how much I’d heard about the Evo being one of the top cross-trainer minimalist shoes ever designed, I decided to mix things up a bit and throw in some roadwork as well.
About halfway through my three-miles on the road, I started to realize that the toe box on the Evo was probably the widest of any shoe I own. I have moderately-wide feet, so I sometimes feel cramped and restricted by certain minimalist shoes, but this was definitely not the case here. The overall feel of these shoes on the road was absolutely great as well. As I mentioned before, it almost felt like running in socks.
Next, it was on to my favorite trail for a little seven-mile off-road run. It was here that the versatility of the Evo really started to shine through. Even though the going was a little slick (we had gotten an unusual summer rainstorm here in Southern California), the soles on the Evos never gave any hint of losing traction. I was also able to feel the ground beneath me far better than I usually do with my VFFs.
To sum it all up, I was extremely impressed with the VIVOBAREFOOT Evo Running shoe. Now, they are a little bit pricier than other barefoot running shoes on the market today, but I personally feel that they are worth every extra cent.
